#BLM Official Statement

To our Black Artists, Audiences, Friends, and Family-

We condemn the acts of violence against Black Americans that have occurred for far too long. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbrey, and countless others at the hands of police officers stand as a reminder of the long struggle, spanning several hundred years, of what it means to be Black in America. Flying Anvil Theatre recognizes you, loves you, and stands beside you.

Black People have for too long been primarily represented on stage and film as poor, criminal, or enslaved. This misrepresentation feeds into implicit bias against Black People, because they are not being seen on stage as fully human. Though this representation is beginning to change, we can do more to present Black Artists in our specific space. We must all do our part to increase equity in the theatre and Flying Anvil is committed to represent artists, particularly those that are Black, by bringing more voices to the table, and continuing to bring diverse works to the Knoxville area.
